Now, join us for a conversation with Elsa Ortiz, an actress who, with her passion for the craft and her commitment to truth, continues to leave her mark on the world of entertainment.
Elsa, you have already achieved a notable career on Mexican television. How do you see your current success?
Elsa Ortiz: I believe I’ve made good decisions about the direction of my career. Of course, I feel there are still many dreams and goals to fulfill. I consider myself someone who always seeks to do different things that challenge me as an actress, that help me grow and experience new facets with each character. So I’m always looking for new projects and never stop preparing myself.
Throughout your career, what was the most important advice you received from other actors or directors?
EO: That my career depends solely on me, on the effort I put in and the opportunities I seek. Of course, I think it’s always beneficial to be surrounded by kind and professional people. But over time, that advice from a teacher has made more sense.
Do you feel that female roles in soap operas are changing? How do you see the evolution of female characters in Latin entertainment?
EO: Very much so. I think we’ve moved past the era where women were the weak characters in stories, those who needed to be rescued, the victims. Now, female characters have undergone a huge shift: we are the strong ones, the rescuers, the independents. We also play roles of successful people who can support a family, run a business, etc., without the help of a man. This is much more interesting to see in today’s projects.
What do you do to prepare emotionally and physically to portray such diverse characters?
EO: A lot of things! I read a lot, look for books, notes, news related to my character. I talk a lot with my directors and producers to understand the direction they want for my character. Then, with my acting coach, I work on the emotional side. I find the voice, gestures, tastes of my character, and the creation of each one is very exciting. As the months of filming progress, I always find interesting things about my character that come from instinct. It’s very fun!
Now, female characters have undergone a huge shift: we are the strong ones.
What’s your routine outside of filming? What do you like to do to relax and disconnect from work?
EO: I love sports: gym, climbing, hiking. I like to take time to treat myself with a good massage. I really enjoy being home with my husband and my three dogs. I love traveling, visiting my family in Guadalajara. I love doing things at home, remodeling, rearranging, and changing spaces, going to the movies, and always looking for something new to learn during project breaks: I take singing, painting, or cooking classes; I return to my English classes, take acting courses.
What inspires you to keep reinventing yourself as an actress, especially in such a competitive market like Latin media?
EO: The teachings my parents gave me inspire me. Thinking that if I keep preparing, I can be a better actress. I’m very curious, always like learning new things, and I like to do them well.
The entertainment industry has transformed with social media and digital platforms. How do you manage fame on social media?
EO: I try to use it as a tool and focus on what I want to communicate, not on negative comments; there will always be different opinions. I also like to use my social media to help and contribute however I can.
What do you find most rewarding in your acting career?
EO: Telling stories with beautiful and controversial messages, that break paradigms.
How do you feel about the representation of Latina women in international productions?
EO: Excited to see that we have the opportunity to showcase all the Latin talent we have and that international productions are now considering Latin characters to tell their stories.
Do you think there is a growing space for Latina actresses on the global stage?
EO: Of course. We already have several Latina actresses working in highly recognized international productions. I believe there are more opportunities every day for Latinos in general, not just as actors, but also as producers and directors. We have a lot of talent, and I don’t doubt that we’ll soon be covering even more of this market.
Is motherhood part of your future plans? How do you see balancing that stage of life with your acting career?
EO: Absolutely. Being a mother and building a family with my husband is one of my dreams. I think that if a woman has this desire, it doesn’t have to be incompatible with any career. Everything requires time and dedication. It’s not like you stop being an actress or a businesswoman or whatever you do because you’re a mother. I had a professional mother who always worked and was (and is) the best mom in the world. That inspires me, and that’s how I see myself, working happily with my baby on set when the time comes.
What are the key values you consider essential to stay true to yourself in such a competitive industry?
EO: Respect above all! Respect for time, opinions, ways of thinking. We are artists, and each mind is a world. Respect for yourself, knowing your worth. There will be many “no’s,” but also some very successful “yeses.” You have to prepare yourself to do your job well; that’s also respect for others. Learning your lines, studying your character, and having fun; that’s why we’re here!
For you, what is the legacy you’d like to leave in television and film? What do you hope people remember about Elsa Ortiz in the future?
EO: I’d like to be remembered as an actress committed to her career. I’d love to play an iconic action role; that really interests me. And to be remembered as a kind person.
